About The Event

In this class, we will be exploring the evolution of Shibari over the course of the 20th and early 21st centuries, primarily as a gateway for understanding the aesthetic properties of major styles taught today and the origins of many modern techniques.


Specific topics will include:

  • Pre-Akechi Shibari history from Seiu Ito forward

  • Foundational photographers: Norio Segiura and Nobuyoshi ArakiImpact of Akechi Denki, His students and contemporaries

  • Stylistic Hallmarks of Kazami Ranki, Hajime Kinoko (and the Ichinawakai), Kanna, Yagami Ren, Akira Naka, Arisue Go, Saki Kamijoo, Kasumi Hourai, Yoi Yoshida, and Yukimura Haruki (with short tying exercises)
